Experience in arbitration

Armesto & asociados: Senior Associate

Since 2002 Deva Villanúa has been working in team with Juan Fernández-Armesto, founding partner of Armesto & Asociados, in more than 60 arbitration proceedings, including domestic and international, ad-hoc and administrative arbitrations and involving commercial, as well as construction and investment disputes.

Most of the international commercial cases were administered by the ICC, whilst other arbitrations were conducted under the rules of the AAA and LCIA. As regards international commercial ad-hoc arbitrations, most of them were subject to the UNCITRAL Rules.

Deva Villanúa has acted as Secretary to the Arbitral Tribunal in more than 15 arbitrations.

Her experience in domestic commercial arbitration relates to cases administered by the Madrid Court of Arbitration, CIMA, Spanish Court of Arbitration and TAB. Deva Villanúa has also participated in domestic commercial ad-hoc cases subject only to the Spanish Arbitration Act.

With respect to investment arbitrations, Deva Villanúa has had an active involvement in the following cases, all administered by ICSID: Unisys Corporation vs.República Argentina, SAUR Internacional vs. República Argentina, Joseph C. Lemire vs. Ukraine, City Oriente Limited vs. República del Ecuador and Empresa Estatal Petróleos del Ecuador. She has also participated as Assistant Secretary to the Arbitral Tribunal in the NAFTA arbitration Vito G. Gallo vs. Canada.

Deva Villanúa is member of the panel of arbitrators of the Madrid Court of Arbitration.

Spanish Arbitration club: cofounder and co chair of CEA-40

Deva is Co-founder of the under forty branch of the Spanish Arbitration Club and at present, as chair of the group, responsible of the Spanish, Portuguese and Latin-American young practitioners associated to the Spanish Arbitration Club. She also acts representative of the CEA-40 before other young practitioners groups and is in charge of the annual programme of activities.

Education

Deva Villanúa obtained the Abitur at the German School in Madrid.

She holds a double degree in Law and Business Administration (University Carlos III, Madrid).

On her last year at Law school, Deva participated in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, and won an Honourable Mention in the Pieter Sanders Award for best memorandum for Claimant.
